Street Lights – Marion
presently funds the operation of over 400 street lights throughout the City.
These lights are maintained by the Kentucky Utility Company (KU). To inquire
about adding a street light to the system, contact the City Administrator’s
office at 270-965-2266 or by email.
City Street Maintenance – Marion’s
Street Department is responsible for routine maintenance and repairs on the
City’s 39 miles of streets and alleys. The Department also makes minor drainage
improvements, maintains Veteran’s Park, operates a street sweeper, sprays for
mosquitoes, provides fall leaf pickup services, and operates snow removal
equipment during winter weather emergencies. To place a work request for the

Fire Protection – The City is served by a volunteer fire department
located at 108 Bellville Street
in downtown Marion.
The department is manned by a chief, assistant chief, and 23 volunteers.
Equipment consists of one 1,250-gallon per minute pumper truck, and two
750-gallon per minute pumper trucks. The fire station is located within 1.6
miles of the farthest part of the City. Marion’s
fire insurance rating is Class 6.
In fiscal year 2008-2009 the City
intends to build a new 3- or 4-bay fire station. Site selection, planning and
design of the new station should be accomplished in 2007-2008.
Recreation Facilities – Marion owns two
parks: 1) Veteran’s Park, a one-acre playground and basketball court at the
corner of Travis and North Weldon Streets; and 2) Lake George Park,
a 19-acre passive recreation area, with picnic tables, grill, and shelter. The
major recreation facility in Marion is the City-County Park on Old Morganfield Road, which is operated
by a parks board made up of appointees from both the city and county
governments. City-County
Park is a 45-acre
facility, with lighted baseball and softball fields, tennis and volleyball
courts, soccer field, picnic shelters and pavilion, and walking trails. The
City of Marion intends to construct a
skateboarding facility at City-County
Park in the 2007-2008
fiscal year.
