Other Departments/Services

Street Lights – Marion presently funds the operation of over 400 street lights throughout the City. These lights are maintained by the Kentucky Utility Company (KU). To inquire about adding a street light to the system, contact the City Administrator’s office at 270-965-2266 or by email.

City Street Maintenance – Marion’s Street Department is responsible for routine maintenance and repairs on the City’s 39 miles of streets and alleys. The Department also makes minor drainage improvements, maintains Veteran’s Park, operates a street sweeper, sprays for mosquitoes, provides fall leaf pickup services, and operates snow removal equipment during winter weather emergencies. To place a work request for the Street Department, contact Terri Hart at 270-965-2266 or by email.

Fire Protection – The City is served by a volunteer fire department located at 108 Bellville Street in downtown Marion. The department is manned by a chief, assistant chief, and 23 volunteers. Equipment consists of one 1,250-gallon per minute pumper truck, and two 750-gallon per minute pumper trucks. The fire station is located within 1.6 miles of the farthest part of the City. Marion’s fire insurance rating is Class 6.

In fiscal year 2008-2009 the City intends to build a new 3- or 4-bay fire station. Site selection, planning and design of the new station should be accomplished in 2007-2008.

Recreation Facilities – Marion owns two parks: 1) Veteran’s Park, a one-acre playground and basketball court at the corner of Travis and North Weldon Streets; and 2) Lake George Park, a 19-acre passive recreation area, with picnic tables, grill, and shelter. The major recreation facility in Marion is the City-County Park on Old Morganfield Road, which is operated by a parks board made up of appointees from both the city and county governments. City-County Park is a 45-acre facility, with lighted baseball and softball fields, tennis and volleyball courts, soccer field, picnic shelters and pavilion, and walking trails. The City of Marion intends to construct a skateboarding facility at City-County Park in the 2007-2008 fiscal year.
